Rich Onion Gravy

The perfect gravy to serve with bangers and mash or other hearty winter dishes. Fantastic for a Sunday roast!

Rich Onion Gravy

Time: Prep 10 mins, Cook 20 mins

Dietary: Vegan

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp marmite or yeast extract
  • 250mls hot water
  • 1tbsp plain white flour
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method:

  1. Gently fry the onion in the sunflower oil until soft, but not browned. Take off the heat and set aside.
  2. Place the marmite in a measuring jug and pour in the hot water, stir until the marmite has dissolved.
  3. Reheat the onions and stir in the flour. Stir continuously over a gentle heat to ‘cook’ the flour.
  4. On a medium heat, slowly add the hot water and marmite, stirring all the time, and then simmer for a few minutes until the gravy has thickened.
  5. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
